First of all, make sure your car is prepared for winter. If you live in an area where winter means heavy snow and cold, you should make some changes to your car.  Make sure to use winter tyres and regularly verify their condition and pressure. Check tyre thread depths, too. Also make sure that the battery is fully charged (or almost fully charged) and in good condition.

Brakes and brake lights must work properly. It is recommended to have a full fuel tank before leaving, so, if you get stuck, you can at least keep the engine running and warm you.

Carefully plan the route and let the friends, family and close ones know it.  If something gets wrong, they will be able to inform the authorities about the route and plan a more effective rescue mission.

You should not use cruise control on snow/icy/wet roads. Conditions can modify over every hill and around every curve. Pay attention to bridge decks and overpasses as they become icy.

Equip your car with a scraper, small shovel, jumper cables, tow chain and a bag of sand or cat litter for tire traction.  You should pack: blankets, heavy boots, warm clothing and flashlights. When driving, make sure to have on board high-energy foods such as chocolate or energy bars.
